I learned my piping in the local Boys' Brigade Company as a boy and young officer. I was also given the opportunity to perform many of the Pipe Major functions during this time.

In 1975, having married and moved a mile up the road, I was asked to take over / resurrect the Pipe Band of the 128th Glasgow Company Boysí Brigade. After two years hard graft the band was ready to go out on the road and was soon able to start competing.

The band has now grown to eighty playing members and a further twenty learning. Throughout the years I have learned not only the skills of discharging the duties of a Pipe Major, but also the Secretary, Treasurer, Tutor, CD Producer, Concert Producer / Director and Overseas Trip Coordinator.

In 1997, after twenty-eight years in the Insurance Industry, I decided to change direction and develop piping, rather than having to relocate my family to London. This extra time has given me the opportunity to develop the areas mentioned above. The sales and senior management skills from the insurance market have proved to be an invaluable asset.

My solo piping experience includes playing at weddings, dinners and Burns' Suppers. I have now trained over 200 pipers both through the band system and by one-to-one tuition.

In recent years my travels have taken me to Jersey, the Isle of Man, Dublin, Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir (Turkey), Albertslund (Denmark), Madrid, Barcelona and Avilés (all Spain), Mühldorf (Germany), Plzen (Czech Republic), Chicago, New York and Cleveland (all U.S.A.), the Caribbean and Australia. In addition to this I have spent fourteen weeks touring round Europe and eight weeks touring the States.

Other interests and activities include being a Director and Past-President of "The Sandyford Burns' Club" Treasurer of our local Town Twinning Association and a painter of watercolour landscapes. I also have a very great interest in model railways and play the very occasional game of golf.

I am currently working with a friend, who lives just outside Copenhagen, to develop a piece of bagpipe music, which I wrote in 1999, into what we hope will be a symphony for big band, brass band, pipe band and choir. The work is scheduled to be completed by June 2002.
