Dave Johnston

I like to think of myself as a versatile and experienced piper. I learnt to play through the 128th Glasgow Company of the Boys' Brigade, which I was a member of both as a boy and an officer. At the age of nine I was playing with the pipe band and this connection has remained to this day as I am still a Boys' Brigade officer (albeit slightly less active than I once was) and I play with the Williamwood Pipe Band, on the southern outskirts of Glasgow. This band is the adult section that developed from the original B.B. band.

I feel comfortable playing both solo and with either mini-bands or the full band. I have performed at a number of dinners, Burnsí Suppers, weddings and funerals as a solo piper and at competitions, concerts, parades, Gala Days and other large functions with the band. Over the last few years I have also piped regularly for Highland Dancers, and have even tried piping for both Irish Dancing and the less traditional ìModernî dancing, through private dance schools.

I am essentially a senior member of the Williamwood Pipe Band, and as such have inherited various tasks from time-to-time, including occasional sessions as Acting Pipe Major, more regular sessions as Drill Instructor (I knew that B.B. training would come in useful), Uniform Coordinator, Marketing Coordinator, Tutor, CD Producer, Concert Script Writer and Overseas Trip Coordinator, amongst many other things.

I left the Civil Engineering field in October 2000, wanting to pursue my love of piping, knowing though that a stable engineering background would be a good basis for tackling the challenges of business. I also have six years of sales experience behind me, which I found to be both educational and character building. Becoming a partner in a business produces many interesting and challenging opportunities, which I see as a benefit to both my personal and professional development.

The time that has been created by leaving engineering has allowed me to travel even further than in previous years. Having visited some of the closer destinations, such as Jersey, the Isle of Man and Dublin, the wider travel opportunities have since taken me to Turkey, Denmark, Spain, Germany, Czech Republic and the United States. Broadening my horizons has given me a more balanced outlook on different customs and cultures whilst also helping to develop a greater appreciation for things closer to home.

My other interests include Robert Burns', having been a past director of The Sandyford Burns' Club and having spoken at Burns' Nights I've helped to organise, and Town Twinning, where I am the past Secretary of the East Renfrewshire Town Twinning Association.

I am a keen follower of the Celtic music scene and am one of the founding members of the Celtic folk group Shoogle Ma' Doughle. I have played a number of instruments during various performances, including Highland Bagpipes, Lowland Small-pipes, Small-pipes in the key of "A" and a selection of whistles. I have even tried my hand at playing the bodhran, however my talents may be more tuned to playing the previous selection of instruments. I suppose one of my dreams would be to perform on stage during the Celtic Connections Festival in Glasgow, Scotland, but for now I will be content to pay my money and watch the established bands (like everyone else).
