Picking Your Piper

So you've decided to hire a piper for your big day, but how do you actually do it? We at Piping Services Scotland have put together a, guide to help you find a piper to match your needs

Where and How?
Where is the best place to look for a piper? Pipers advertise themselves in many different ways. One of the best places to find a piper for a wedding is at the big Wedding Shows at the SECC and Glasgow Royal Concert Hall among others. If, however, you are not looking for a piper to play at a wedding there are many other places you can turn. A number of pipers have adverts in the Yellow Pages in various sections. You can also find pipers online either through their own websites or at yell.com, the online Yellow Pages. Many hotels and other venues do have resident pipers with many others having a list of pipers that they recommend so don't be afraid to ask.

Price
There is saying that goes 'you get what you pay for' and with pipers its no different. You will find, if you shop around, that the higher quality piping companies often have very similar prices. The price for the hire of a piper will also change depending the date, for example most pipers will charge more for the second and the last Saturday in August these are the days of the World Pipe Band Championships and the Cowal Highland Gathering respectively.

Uniform
The uniform that pipers where can differ quite a bit. There are a number of pipers who favour the Full Military Uniform. The Partners and the other pipers used Piping Service Scotland tend to turn out in the Prince Charlie Uniform which is less over-powering. There are also a number of pipers who, due the uniform style being favoured by pipe bands, will tend to turn out in the Argyle Uniform.
